I have always been interested in identity and the influences that shape who we become. When I had a daughter (K), I began to question societal constructs of girlhood. In Simone De Beauvoir’s The Second Sex, she wrote, “One is not born a woman: one becomes a woman.” De Beauvoir notes the difference between being female and being a woman – the latter is learned. Numerous art projects followed, most with K’s participation. Our last project together, Flower Woman, was created when K was thirteen. SKIN was filmed thirteen years later and reflects on those early years of filming, the relevance of girlhood––K is non-binary––and today’s puzzling emphasis on gender.
