“Now for the Painter” – review

For her previous installation at Rymer Gallery, Chicago-based Catherine Forster created a lush forest setting. This time around, her inspiration comes from JMW Turner — specifically, the painter’s last seascapes.

“Now for the Painter,” Forster’s homage, consists of 10 archival laser prints — each a numbered version of the exhibition title — some with crashing waves reminiscent of Turner’s seascapes, others with tranquil colors and shapes suggesting landscapes (at which Turner was also adept). Hung on Tuscany gold panels painted to the artist’s specifications and covering the room’s brick walls, all the prints are taken from the four short, ethereal videos Forster created for the project. These source videos, the most intriguing elements of the show, are the smallest elements in the installation. Filmed without sound and gently out of focus and featuring boats Forster made from the pages of Art Forum magazine, they perfectly capture the light, colors and essence of Turner’s watercolors.
“Now for the Painter” is on view through Nov. 14 at The Rymer Gallery, 233 Fifth Ave. N. An artist’s reception for this show and an exhibition of paintings by Gabriel Mark takes place 6-9 p.m. Nov. 7. Regular gallery hours are 11 a.m.-6 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday.
